William Roberts, husband of the late Lavonda Roberts, took his wife’s place on the White City Council Monday, Aug. 6. Mayor Chris Allen nominated him for the position and had encouraged him to accept. As the council approved his nomination, Roberts will serve the three unexpired years of his wife’s term.

City Manager Jane Richards said she was looking forward to working with Roberts, and believed he was very qualified for the job.

“Ronnie has been a been affiliated with the city in other ways. He was actually on the zoning board at one time for several years,” she said. “So he’s not really a stranger to city business, and he was married to a council member. She was on there for 23 and a half years, so I’m sure he’s pretty familiar [with the council]. He know’s what’s going on.”

Richards presented a revised list of rental fees for the city’s club house and meeting room in city hall. Richards said the prices had been lowered because Lavonda Roberts was concerned they were too high.

Prices for the club house and meeting room are identical and start from $25 per hour and go up to $50 or $100 for multiple hours depending on the event. The current form allows for showers, birthday parties, reunions, receptions, meetings and weddings. Any all day events will have their prices determined on an individual basis. Residents interested in renting the club house or meeting room may pick up a form at city hall.

After the meeting, Roberts thanked the council for their support. Council members and other friends had him sent flowers and a cash donation as a love offering in sympathy for his wife’s passing.

The council also approved moving their next meeting to Sept. 4 so it would not interfere with Labor Day. The White City Council is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 4 at the city club house.
