Cass used solid pitching and opportunistic base running to take a 3-1 victory over LaFayette in its opening game of the Region 7-AAAA softball tournament being played in Dalton.

The Lady Colonels never trailed in the game, being played at Heritage Park, scoring their first run in the second inning, adding a second in the third inning and closing out scoring in the fifth, when LaFayette also scored its run.

Breanna Mahrt led the second inning with a single to right to kick off Cass’s offensive efforts.

Lauren Womack, a courtesy runner for Mahrt, stole second to put Cass in scoring position. Kiyanna Farmer reached on an error, when the LaFayette first baseman misplayed the ball, and Womack went home from second to score on the same play to help the Lady Colonels take advantage of the miscue.

The Lady Colonels scored again in the third inning after Camey Kirkland singled to right field and Allison Story hit an infield single. The two moved the third and second respectively on a sacrifice fly by Courtney Bailey and Kirkland crossed home plate when Bethany Ballard tallied an RBI single, giving Cass a 2-0 lead.

LaFayette scored its run in the fifth inning, closing to 2-1.

Cass added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame when Ashlynn Russell led with a double and advanced to third on a passed ball. She scored on a sacrifice fly by Story, closing scoring at 3-1.
