A 29-year-old female was killed Tuesday morning in a stabbing incident at 370 Old Mill Road.

According to Cartersville Police Department Capt. Mark Camp, about 9:50 a.m. Deandre Davoughin Hightower, 20, of Cartersville allegedly stabbed the woman after an encounter in the bedroom of the Alexandria Landing apartment.

Camp said the altercation — although it was unclear who or what caused the fight — awakened another female resident who was sleeping on the couch at the time.

Hightower fled the scene and was located in a wooded area behind a church near the apartment complex within 20 minutes of police receiving the call.

Coroner Joel Guyton identified the victim about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday as Candice Piper.

Piper was stabbed multiple times with a knife, Guyton said.

Cartersville Fire Department assisted Bartow County EMS in transporting the victim to Cartersville Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

According to a CPD release, the witness was not stabbed but was treated at the scene by EMTs.

Hightower has been charged with murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault and two counts of false imprisonment.

Camp said Tuesday evening that it did not appear Hightower had a criminal history, but a check of Hightower’s fingerprints may return a record not covered with a check of his name alone.

More information is expected to be released mid-morning today by CPD.

According to crime mapping information from CPD, between Sept. 1 and Tuesday two assaults, an arson and a theft/larceny were reported in the 300 block of Old Mill Road. A business in the 400 block of Old Mill Road also was robbed at gunpoint in the same time frame.
