Human resources seminar set for Nov. 8-9

In an effort to provide additional educational opportunities to small business owners and human resource professionals, the Cartersville-Bartow County Chamber of Commerce Small Business Council and the Bartow County Employer Committee have teamed up to host a two-day human resources seminar next month.

The Cartersville-Bartow County Chamber of Commerce HR Academy, taking place Nov. 8 and 9, will provide area businesses with a chance to hear lessons from labor attorneys at Fisher & Phillips LLP on issues of immigration, hiring and firing practices, social media policies, e-verify regulations and other areas of interest.

“They are a nationally recognized firm for labor attorneys,” said Chamber Chief Financial Officer LaDonna Jordan. “We looked at some different sessions, they had a lot to choose from and the Small Business Council along with the Employer Committee met to pick the ones we thought were pertinent in Bartow County.

“A lot of larger companies have an entire department dedicated to human resources, but on the other side, small business owners can get a great deal out of this too because they don’t have a human resources department — they are human resources. ... So the topics we chose, we wanted to offer things that both large and small companies will deal with. We wanted to be able to provide a service for all types of employees and all types of businesses for anyone who has to deal with human resources issues.”

The Bartow County Employer Committee is a cooperative board made of business leaders, human resource professionals and representatives from the Georgia Department of Labor working to educate, inform and advocate for employers. Committee Chair Deborah Sexton urges other small business owners, such as herself, to educate themselves on the legal issues surrounding their business.

“You don’t have to be a human resource professional to attend our meeting, just like this academy, you could be a small business owner. They may not realize it, but they have a role in human resources, too. They have to write out the paychecks, and if they have employees, they have to know the legal way to do everything,” Sexton said, mentioning one of the seminar topics by name. “‘The Legal Basics of Hiring and Firing.’ That one kind of stands out to me as a small business owner. When you start hiring and firing people, you can’t just do it on a whim, you need to do what is legally right — or in the long run it will cost you.”

As part of the chamber’s partnership with the Bartow Employer Committee, a portion of the proceeds from the HR academy will benefit the annual Hoops For Hope basketball tournament raising funds for scholarships and Bartow Give A Kid A Chance. This year’s event, taking place on the first Saturday in December, will be the employer committee’s 10th Hoops For Hope tournament and organizers are tripling the size of the outreach, which gives youth basketball teams a chance to play for an audience while raising money for charity.

“This is our 10th anniversary and part of the proceeds will benefit our Hoops for Hope scholarship program and Bartow Give A Kid A Chance. So not only will HR folks walk away with more knowledge, but the money is also going back into the community,” Sexton said. “In the past nine years, Hoops For Hope has only been in one gym, but this year we will have three gyms. So we are really going out on a limb this year and need all the support we can get from the community.”

The Cartersville-Bartow County Chamber of Commerce HR Academy will take place at the Chamber of Commerce, 122 W. Main St., Thursday, Nov. 8, and Friday, Nov. 9, from 7:30 to 11 a.m. both days. Topics covered Thursday will include Social Media in the 2012 Workplace; What You Need to Know About Wage and Hour Compliance; and Sick and Tired: Managing Employee Attendance. Friday’s topics will be: Immigration Compliance Update; Protecting Your Confidential Information, Relationships and Talent: Non-Compete Agreements, Trade Secrets and Computer Protection Laws; and The Legal Basics of Hiring and Firing.

Registration deadline is Nov. 5 at noon if spots remain. Cost for chamber members is $35 for one day or $50 for both. For non-members, the cost is $70 a day or $100 for both.
