Bojangles’, Dunkin’ Donuts and Walgreens are already under construction in Cartersville, with Steak N’ Shake looking to break ground in November. To the north, cranes are at work on a Hampton Inn in Adairsville to open in February.
The first to reach completion will be Dunkin’ Donuts at the corner of Gentilly Boulevard and U.S. 41, between Nelson’s Home Furnishings and Home Depot. Featuring a drive-thru and Wi-Fi, the Dunkin’ Donuts is set to open mid to late November.
While the uptick in commercial construction has registered with building officials, current projects are just a drop in the bucket for a beleaguered construction industry. City of Cartersville Planning and Development Director Randy Mannino commented on the recent activity, noting that before the housing crisis his office was seeing in excess of 200 new residential construction projects each year for both 2006 and 2007. That number is now down to a few homes each year.
“Construction is under way for Bojangles’, Dunkin’ Donuts and Walgreens. And we are in the final stages for approving site construction plans for Steak N’ Shake. There does seem to be a little increase in the commercial activity, but still no increase in the new residential homes,” Mannino said. “The bulk of our new residential construction is in home modifications and rehabs.”
Meanwhile, the Hampton Inn under construction in Adairsville was recently revived after lying dormant for several years. The land was purchased before the recession began, but the company didn’t go back to work on the 56,400 square-foot facility until earlier this year.
Back in Cartersville, construction crews are at work on the future site of a new Walgreens pharmacy at the corner of Church Street and Tennessee Street. The 13,650 square-foot facility is set to open in the summer or fall of 2013.
Yet to begin construction, is the most recently confirmed project, a Steak N’ Shake restaurant to be built on Main Street in front of Kohl’s, next to Regions Bank. Local attorney Jeff Watkins is the franchisee behind the Cartersville Steak N’ Shake, a popular restaurant chain known for “steakburgers” and milkshakes.
“We’re really excited about it and we’re looking forward to getting the process going,” Watkins said. “We’re moving forward quickly trying to get to a point where we can start construction sometime in November and then hopefully have it open around March, weather permitting.
“I think it puts Cartersville on a different level as far as for certain types of quality restaurants, because they are very selective in where they allow their restaurants and there’s a lot of requirements that go into it and I think they thought a lot of Cartersville and thought it’d be a great place for it.”
The Cartersville Steak N’ Shake will feature a drive-thru window and will be open 24 hours a day.
Bojangles’, a fast-food restaurant serving chicken and biscuits, is going into the former Blockbuster on Main Street in Cartersville. Representatives for the restaurant did not respond before press time to provide an estimated opening date or further information on the location.
