The department’s annual boot drive will be held Oct. 31 and Nov. 1-2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day at the following locations:
- Intersection of Glade Road and Tanyard Creek Road in Acworth
- Intersection of Joe Frank Harris Parkway and Grassdale Road
- Intersection of Joe Frank Harris Parkway and Highway 140 in Adairsville
“The fundraiser is our way to help our community to start to put their life back together if affected by fire,” Bartow County Fire Marshal Bryan Cox said in a release.
All funds raised during the three-day drive will go to nonprofits.
“The boot fundraiser money will be split 50-50 between Red Cross - all monies stay local to help families that have suffered fire loss - and Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation to make sure that everyone has up-to-date treatment for burns in the state of Georgia,” Cox said.
Cartersville Fire Department is encouraging residents to change the battery in their smoke detectors when clocks are set back for daylight saving time. Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 4.
In the event of a fire, a properly installed and maintained smoke alarm can save lives, according to a CFD news release.
All smoke alarms should be tested once a month and batteries replaced at least annually or as indicated by the manufacturer’s instructions.
There are many different brands of smoke alarms available on the market but they fall under two basic types: ionization and photoelectric.
Ionization alarms sound more quickly when a flaming, fast moving fire occurs. Photoelectric alarms are quicker at sensing smoldering, smoky fires. There are also combination (dual sensor) smoke alarms that combine ionization and photoelectric into one unit.
Because both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms are better at detecting different yet potentially fatal fires, and because home residents cannot predict what type of fire might start in a home, CFD recommends the installation of both ionization and photoelectric or dual sensor smoke alarms.
In addition to the basic types of smoke alarms, there are also alarms made to meet the needs of people with disabilities. These alarms may use strobe lights that flash and/or vibrate to assist in alerting those who are unable to hear standard smoke alarms when they sound.
When installing and maintaining smoke alarms:
· Make sure smoke alarms are on every level of your home, outside sleeping areas and inside bedrooms.
· The best mounting location is center of the ceiling at least 12 inches from a wall; the next best location is on a wall 12 inches down from the ceiling.
· Test your smoke alarms once a month by pushing the test button.
· Replace smoke alarms that are more than 10 years old. Combination alarms may need replaced every seven years.
· Develop and practice a home fire escape plan.
