The weekly gardening and horticulture show hosted by Walter Reeves will be without its namesake Saturday and Pugliese was tapped to fill his shoes. Reeves’ absence will have Pugliese as resident expert on the receiving end of caller questions, not unlike his daily role as county coordinator.
“It’s a call-in radio show. It’s the Lawn and Garden radio show with Walter Reeves. He’s not going to be on the show this weekend, so he’s asked me to fill in. They’ll have another host that will be taking the call-in questions from all over metro Atlanta and I’ll be answering the questions,” Pugliese said. “It’s pretty much wide open as far as the discussion and the types of questions we get. We get a lot of wildlife questions, questions about lawns and vegetable gardens this time of year as far as preparation and getting ready for next year.”
This is not Pugliese’s first time as guest expert filling in for Reeves. As in the past, radio personality and WSB producer Belinda Skelton will guest host, taking questions from callers for Pugliese to answer and joining in discussion on topics that are brought up by listeners.
“Paul is a wonderful guest when it comes to lawn and garden questions,” said Skelton in an email to The Daily Tribune News. “I don’t think a listener has ever stumped him on a question. He connects very well with our listeners. I always learn so much when Paul is my guest expert on the Lawn and Garden show.”
Reeves and Pugliese connected first through the recommendation of colleagues. Pugliese’s name came up as others in the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Program gave recommendations for guest hosts to fill in during Reeves’ absences. Having also worked as an extension agent, Reeves regularly directs questions to local agents, including guests of his website, www.walterreeves.com.
“He used to be a county extension agent himself. ... He worked down in the DeKalb County Extension Office for many years back in the ‘80s so he is well connected with the University of Georgia and the Cooperative Extension Program. He’s still very well connected with what we do and in a lot of his website and his references, he references our publications, our work and our research because he wants to give his audience the best information possible,” Pugliese said. “That’s one of the things I admire most about Walter Reeves and what he has done with the radio show and he used to do the GPB garden show back in the ‘90s, but he’s always been a good friend of the extension as far as collaborating with us. ... That’s one of the things that makes him stand out as compared to other radio show or so-called gardening experts out there. There’s a lot of folks out there that are just trying to sell things, you know they’re just trying to sell a book or whatever and it’s not necessarily the most reputable information.”
Pugliese will appear on air Saturday from 6 to 10 a.m. at AM 750 and 95.5 FM. To call in during the show, dial 404-872-0750 or 1-800-972-8255. To contact Pugliese during regular business hours at the Bartow County Extension Office, call 770-387-5142.
