In an effort to help South Central Middle School students acquire gifts for the holiday season, the school’s Santa Shop is now accepting gently used donations.
“Last year we had 85 shoppers and the first year we had 31 [shoppers],” SCMS administrative assistant and Santa Shop coordinator Julie Hill said. “It gets bigger and bigger every year. We’re now at a point where I usually start with the letter writing campaign and emails eight weeks ahead of time.”
She continued, “For some reason, this area in Bartow County is very, very economically challenged and this middle school in particular seems to have a lot of kids who need this type of attention, and as far as eighth-graders who have [participated in the Santa Shop] the last couple of years, they’re already asking their teachers, ‘Sre they doing the Santa Shop this year?’”
The Santa Shop is in need of donations like gift cards and gift certificates, new or “very gently used” items, candles, lotions, candy, mugs, wrapping paper, ribbon, tape and gifts for men. The shop won’t take clothing due to space and Hill encouraged “re-gifting.”
“Small items are usually best and [the Santa Shop] is set up into different departments,” Hill previously said. “We have a Christmas decoration department if someone wants to get a Christmas ornament, the ladies department will have perfumes, bath supplies, lotions — we try to make up little gift bags of that — a jewelry department, a housewares department with decorations and the men’s section will have things like books, movies, colognes, socks, hats, gloves, tools fishing things, anything for guys — and that’s what we’re usually short on. Moms get taken care of really well.”
Students selected to participate in the Santa Shop will pick out their gifts Thursday, Dec. 20, and Friday, Dec. 21.
Donations may be delivered to the school, located at 224 Old Alabama Road, Emerson. For more information, call 770-606-5865.
