According to a Georgia State Patrol press release, Maria Tabuena, 29, of Calhoun, and Melina Trichell, 4, were killed in the accident.
According to the press release, the accident occurred at approximately 1:25 p.m. The vehicle was traveling northbound in the right-hand lane near exit 293 when a tractor-trailer allegedly forced the SUV out of the lane when the tractor-trailer merged right from the center lane. The SUV then struck a guardrail and an overhead support pillar before catching fire.
The GSP and other law enforcement officers are on the lookout for the tractor-trailer’s driver. It was described as a long-nose, maroon and silver Peterbilt. The tractor and trailer were both “very dirty,” according to the press release, and the trailer is expected to have damage on its right side.
