The Cass Lady Colonels traveled to Augusta Thursday to take on McIntosh County Academy in the Evans Christmas tournament.

Played at Evans High School, the Lady Colonels lost their opening round game to the Lady Mountaineers, 53-39.

“We got close after falling behind early, but then we got into foul trouble and ran out of gas at the end,” Cass coach Jamie Horton said.

It was all offense Thursday at the Pickens holiday basketball tournament for both the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes and the Sprayberry Lady Yellow Jackets.

“As you can tell by the score, there was not a whole lot of defense being played,” Lady Canes’ coach Cindy Moore said. “Tonight we gave up too many transition points.”

The Canes led 23-18 after the first quarter before the Lady Yellow Jackets mounted their comeback. It was 47-40 Sprayberry at halftime.

“We kept getting to within four to five points in the second half,” Moore said.

But Sprayberry held on for the win by making 11-of-14 free throws late in the second half.
