“[I will be talking about] the beginning, when it was founded by David W. Curry in 1873 till when the Young brothers took it over, moving from the original location on Public Square to the current location in 1881,” said Cox, who has owned Young Brothers Pharmacy — located at 2 W. Main St. — since 1968. “[At the program], I’ll have some original handwritten notes from Mr. Curry’s drugstore in 1879 and 1880.
“I have original prescriptions filled at Young Brothers in the 1880s, 1890s [and] various invoices from Mr. Curry’s. Some of the [drugstore’s] outstanding history is Young Brothers had the first public telephone booth in Cartersville. They had the first long distance telephone booth in Cartersville.”
To be held Jan. 16 from noon to 1 p.m., the lecture will be open to the public in the museum at 4 E. Church St., Cartersville.
“My main reason for wanting to feature Young Brothers is it’s been on my list for a while,” BHM Manager of Programs Charity Chastain said. “It’s something that I know I would like to know more about and if I’d like to know more about it, I can hope that the community would feel the same way. And we are coming up on a big anniversary — I think it’s 135 [years] — for the building. The Coke sign itself dates back to 1894 and it’s the world’s first outdoor Coke sign and that again is something that brings a lot of attention to Cartersville and to the pharmacy itself.
“[Dean Cox] has several prescriptions and receipts and things. He even has one from [Confederate Maj. Gen.] P.M.B. Young. So he’s bringing a lot of that and it’s a lot of stuff that we have never seen. So he’s going to share this with the Bartow History Museum and the archives. It’s stuff that we’re going to be able to scan so we’ll have [it] for the future and [these are items] that he’ll be able to show off for the first time.”
While the Lunch and Learn program will be free to BHM members, regular admission will apply to nonmembers. The cost will be $5.50 for adults, $4.50 for seniors 65 and older or students, and free for active military and children 5 and younger.
