Kinsley was born at 12:23 p.m., Tuesday, to Johnathon and Brooke Stone of Cartersville. She is the couple’s second child, after their son Carson, who is 21 months old.
In addition to being the first 2013 baby, their daughter’s birth was already a special event.
“She’s a miracle baby for us because our son was born through infertility, and they told me I’d never be able to do it on my own,” Brooke said. “So she’s our little miracle.”
Kinsley also shares her birthday with Brooke’s sister, who works at CMC in the operating room.
Johnathon and Brooke had wondered if they would make it into the new year, as Brooke checked into the hospital the night of Dec. 31. They had been celebrating Brooke’s mother’s birthday, and when they returned home Brooke realized it was time to go to the hospital.
Brooke’s due date was Jan. 3, but neither her nor Johnathon were concerned about being two days early. They believed their daughter was healthy due to her weight and measurement of 20 inches.
Certified Nurse Midwife Macie Goff, who delivered Kinsley and the 2010 and 2011 New Year’s babies, said every birth was special, but New Year’s always added to the occasion.
“It’s exciting. It’s very exciting,” she said. “It’s just a joy to bring babies into the world anyway, but it’s alway very special to bring the first one of the year in.”
To celebrate the event, a number of organizations put together gift baskets for the family with the first birth. The Women’s Center at CMC and the CMC gift shop gave the Stones two gift baskets and a steak dinner. March of Dimes, which works to ensure healthy births, also donated a gift basket.
A second gift shop basket intended for the year’s first boy was still unawarded at press time.
During 2012 the hospital had more than 900 deliveries, according to a CMC press release, making Kinsley’s birth the first of many expected at the hospital.
For Johnathon, who bought an air mattress so he could sleep in his wife’s room, his daughter’s birth was a good way to start the new year.
“We’re excited. We’re glad to be the New Year’s baby this year ... some people have to do all their resolutions and we’re just happy to have the baby,” he said.
