The Woodland Wildcats won nine matches by pins in easily beating Stephenson, 58-19, in the first round of the Class AAAAA State Duals held Thursday at the Macon Centreplex.

Next up for the Wildcats, who are seeded second behind No. 1 seed Pope High School, is Creekview.

“We had never wrestled against Stephenson, but we have against Creekview,” Woodland coach Adrian Tramutola said.

Woodland and Creekview will wrestle at 9 a.m. today in the state quarterfinals.

“We should be fine if we wrestle the same way we did against Creekview,” Tramutola said.

“We came out quick and fast, and we didn’t wait around to get points. We are hard to beat when we do that.”

Pope, who beat the Wildcats in last years’ state finals, won its first round match with its 60-15 defeat of Hardaway.

The Greyhounds wrestle Whitewater next.
