The organization presented award certificates and medals during the annual ceremony, during which a school representative would speak about the character of a student.
Genie Certain of DAR previously said students were chosen by teachers at their respective schools. Students who receive the good citizenship award often excel academically, but must show good leadership to their peers.
During the event, teachers, administrators and even parents spoke on behalf of the students.
“If you’ve been around Ishara for any period of time, you automatically pick up that she has
intrinsic motivation,” Euharlee Elementary School fifth-grade teacher Karen Farr said of student Ishara Merine. “In other words, she always has the desire inside to always do her best, it doesn’t matter what she’s working on, ... and the best part is she does it all with a smile on her face.”
Students recognized during the event also are involved in extra-curricular activities such as athletics and community service.
