Local and regional talent will be on display next Friday night as Rotary Club of Etowah breaks from tradition with a fundraising event sure to pack a punch.

Punchlines will in fact be the main event as rising comedic stars take the stage at the Cartersville Country Club on Friday, Feb. 1, for the inaugural Laughs and Libations.

Clint Edwards, comedian and owner of Cartersville’s Jordan Scott Salon, will headline the show along with comedian Ben Thompson and opening act Ryan Darling.

Event organizer Rick Kolhoff expressed the inspiration in hosting a night of comedic acts as an attempt at something new, which led the club to seek out local talent.

“We really wanted something different. We wanted to have a fun event that our members in the community would support,” Kolhoff said. “It’s funny because we didn’t really even know we had this kind of talent locally. We decided this was the kind of event we wanted and went from there looking for comedians. We found Clint pretty quickly and then he’s the one that found the other guys for us. They’re all relatively new to the business, but as we started looking into it, we found that several of our Rotary members had been to Clint’s shows and found he was quite funny.

“As we’ve been organizing this, I keep talking to more people who have either heard [Edwards] perform professionally or they know him from his salon — and we’ve got a lot of people coming just because they know he’s funny.”

Edwards, a Cartersville resident, was a 2012 winner of Atlanta’s Dogwood Fringe Comedy Competition and regularly performs at the Laughing Skull Lounge in Atlanta. Thompson, also performing at next week’s event, is from Trion and has performed at clubs across the country, including recent appearances at The Punchline Comedy Club in Atlanta and The Comedy Catch in Chattanooga.

Space is limited, but the club hopes to see that change as the event grows.

“Rotary Club of Etowah is so excited to present this unique event to our community,” stated Club President Laura Allgood in a release. “An upbeat, lively evening is the perfect representation of our club membership. We look forward to a few hours of laughter with friends, old and new.”

A variety of items, including several vacation home packages, will be available for silent auction bidding. There also will be a raffle drawing for an iPad. The raffle winner does not need to be present to win.

Raffle tickets are $5 each and only 300 will be sold. Admission is $30 per person and tickets must be purchased in advance. Heavy hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar will open at 7 p.m. with entertainment beginning at 8 p.m. Dessert will be offered after the show.

All proceeds from Laughs and Libations will benefit local nonprofits supported regularly by the club, including Advocates for Children, Boys & Girls Club of Bartow County, Boy Scouts of America, Cartersville Little League, Girl Scouts of the USA, Good Neighbor Homeless Shelter and others.
