White approves raise for city employees

City of White employees will be getting a 5 percent raise this year, as approved by the city council during its Feb. 4 meeting.

City Manager Jane Richards said the raise was built into the 2013 budget, and there was flexibility in how large a raise the council could approve.

“It was budgeted. What I do every year is I budget enough for a raise, up to 5 percent, and then they decide how much they’re going to give us,” she said.

White presently has three full-time and two part-time employees. Richards also said the council had approved raises between 2 and 5 percent over the past “several years.”

During the Feb. 4 meeting, Richards reported that the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority had received the city’s application for the sewer project’s interim financing. The GEFA board will take up the application during its March 19 meeting. Richards said she expected the application to be approved.

Mayor Chris Allen also updated the council on the School Street water main project. The 6-inch water line has been installed, and it awaits the proper connections, flushing and sterilization. The School Street repaving project, Richards added, will begin once the water main is connected.

Preparations are still under way for the White Spring Festival. Vendor applications, which can be acquired at White city hall, are due by April 1. The car and bike shows, Richards said, are ready and they will have two categories, custom and original. Allen added that the Methodist Church has allowed the city to use their parking lot.

Other city council business included:

• Approving a resolution to hold a November 2013 referendum on permitting package sales of malt beverages and wine on Sundays.

• Approving a bid from Precinct One Auto Sales on the White Police Department’s 2005 Ford Crown Victoria in the sum of $2,050.

The White City Council’s next meeting is scheduled for March 4 at 7 p.m. at city hall.
