The box office bomb at Carmike Cinemas on Thursday wasn’t on the big screen.

According to Bartow County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Sgt. Jonathan Rogers, a small, plastic bottle-type device was tossed into a trash bin outside the theater on North Tennessee Street about 5:30 p.m. The homemade explosive detonated inside the can, causing no damage to the trash can or building.

Cartersville and Bartow County fire departments and BCSO units, who were still on scene at 9 p.m. Thursday, responded to the call, roping off the area with crime scene tape.

CFD Battalion Chief Mark Bagley said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist on the case.

No one was injured in the explosion.

Kitchen fire damages home

BCFD crews responded Thursday morning about 7 a.m. to a fire at a residence in White.

According to the department, stations 1, 5 and 13 responded to the single-story structure at 100 Old Furnace Road. The kitchen and living room suffered damage, $20,000 in property and $5,000 in contents.

The cause of the fire is believed to be electrical.

BCFD stations 3, 9, 11 and 12 also were called to a Plainview Drive residence Thursday after a power strip shorted out.

No damage was done to the residence.
