Point, set and match for both Woodland’s boys, girls tennis teams

The Woodland girls and boys high school tennis teams opened region play on a winning note, both taking 5-0 victories over New Manchester this week.

Lady Wildcats 5, New Manchester 0

In singles play for Woodland, which plays in Region 5-AAAAA:

Erin Marratta defeated Dejean Smith 6-0, 6-0; LeArian Turner defeated Brandi Edwards 6-0, 6-0; and Katie Abernathy defeated Jennifer Nguyen 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles play, Susy Beltran and Karlie Abernathy defeated Stephanie Ooton and Emmanuella Gouregie 6-2, 6-0; while Sadie Westberry and Somalia Lewis defeated Faith Grace and Cathy Dang 8-0.

Beth Heath, Woodland girls coach, said New Manchester was a different kind of challenge for her team.



Wildcats 5, New Manchester 0

The Woodland boys also dominated New Manchester in their matches.

In singles play:

Dustin Dodson defeated Jeremiah Bradley 6-0, 6-0; Brandon Rutledge overpowered Oluremi Bradley 6-0, retired; Bryce Webb beat Darian Griffith 8-1 (pro-set).
