Cartersville used two steals, a pair of 3-pointers and a handful of deuces to engineer a 14-9 run and pull within 57-56 of Oconee at the 1:34 mark of the final quarter.

Then all the plays that worked quit working for the Lady Purple Hurricanes and they failed to find net the final minute and a half of the game and fell Wednesday night at the Storm Center, 61-56, to Oconee in the first round of the state playoffs.

“There are no words to console a senior this time of year,” coach Cindy Moore said. “Only about 14 teams will finish with a win, and I feel for our seniors.”

The Cartersville coach said while the Lady Canes took the loss hard, they left their best effort on the court.

“Obviously we battled and battled all night,” she said. “It was a game that was never out of reach.”

Cartersville led by as much as six points in the game and never trailed by more than eight. The coach said the Lady Canes fought very hard, especially with their backs to the wall in the fourth quarter.
