Who doesn’t like a little whodunit with dinner?

Connect Church in Emerson is hoping the community, expecially couples, can enjoy a mystery and dinner during “An Italian Job,” an all-inclusive date night show, this weekend.

“Before Connect Church started having weekly services, we surveyed the community and many people commented that Emerson did not have a whole lot to do as way of community events and activities for them and their children,” said spokesman Michael Long. “We wanted to do a date night-themed event to celebrate the month of love. We thought the dinner theater would be a fun entertaining way to get members of Emerson to get to know each other.”

Doors open Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Emerson Community Center, 124 2nd St., with the show beginning at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Like any mystery dinner theater, participants will be involved in solving a crime — with various parts acted out — while a dinner of salad, lasagna, dessert and a beverage is served.

“The investigation part of the show allows for guests to interact with each other to solve the crime if they wish to do so,” Long said.

The dinner theater is not the first event the church has hosted in Emerson as it sponsored a trunk-or-treat happening in October.

“Our goal for this event is to get the community together, and if we can do this by providing a free meal and entertainment, it is worth it,” Long said. “We understand that any community event starts small. We hope that over the next few years the turnout for such events becomes so great that we will no longer be able to do it for free.”

Long said the church hopes to not only provide fun for the community but to bring residents into a personal relationship with Jesus.

“The mission of Connect Church is to connect people to Jesus, His message and His mission,” he said. “... We want people to discover all the things God has for them. People want interaction with others; many want to establish friendships that last and someone to share life experiences with. We believe this can be done, and if Connect Church is a small part of that, we've done exactly what God has called us to do.”
