“What if we could combine the brand of Chick-fil-A, with the potential and power of the local church, together with all local leaders in the community, and what if we could bring a camp specifically for completed first through sixth graders that would eventually impact the entire family, and if we could impact the entire family, then maybe we could transform society right here in places like Cartersville,” Director of Winshape for Communities Gabe Norris said at the Winshape kickoff, held Wednesday at Tabernacle Baptist Church, sponsor of the event. “... Wouldn’t it be great bringing to this town a phenomenal camp experience?”
According to www.winshape.org, “Winshape Camps for Communities is powered by Connect Ministries, Inc. Connect Ministries, Inc. exists for the sole purpose of equipping churches with the resources needed to connect with their community.”
The camp last summer hosted about 250 students at Trinity United Methodist Church. Norris said he wants the number of campers this year to grow to 325.
He explained while the Winshape organization will bring along its approximate 23 camp instructors, it is seeking the aid of the community for volunteers to help with the camp.
“We want to build the camp. We want this community to come alongside of us without the pressure of building [the camp], and build the relationship,” Norris said. “The truth is, we will come June 24 and leave June 28, and these will be the people who remain after the experience has come and gone.”
He added, “... What Winshape Camps has is a message of hope that can restore the lives of families so that generations from now, the world will never be the same because of a group like this came together to do something about a real-life issue that they went face-to-face with it.”
Skill classes featured at the camp include, archery, soccer, drama, fast food, cheerleading, photography, whiffle ball, flag football, crafts, dance, gymnastics and “wacky science.” The total cost of the camp is $189 and interested parties can make a $50 deposit at www.winshapecamps.org/communities.
The camp is seeking volunteers at www.winshapecamps.org/wscvolunteer, for positions ranging from skill time assistant and cleanup to special jobs, like preparing meals and unloading and loading the camp truck.
Scholarships also are available. For more information on how to become involved, contact Lisa Bandy at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 770-382-1977.
