Canes sweep Tigers

Cartersville’s boys and girls tennis teams defeated Adairsville in their schools’ first region matchup Thursday.

The Purple Hurricanes won 4-1 and the Lady Canes took a 5-0 victory in the matches, which were played at Dellinger Park.

The victories improved the boys’ overall record to 8-1 and the girls team to 9-0, with both holding 8-0 region marks.

“It feels good to have perfect region records,” Melissa Moore, Cartersville coach, said, “but there’s a lot of pressure to keep that winning streak going.”

In boys tennis play, Cartersville No. 1 singles player Trevor Gotkowski defeated Cray Spencer, 6-0, 6-0; No. 2 Nathan Slocum won in three sets, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4, against Peyton Cox; and No. 3 Drew Adsit defeated Chris Hawkins, 6-4, 6-2.

In No. 1 doubles play, Tyler Hill and Matthew Scott scored 6-3, 6-2 victories over Brett Gutkowski and Cothran Roberson; while No. 2 doubles players Wyndham Laye and Avery Andrews lost 7-5, 6-7, 3-10 in a 10-point tiebreaker to Brandon Brugh and Dylan Lange.
