GHC to host NWGA Management Conference

At the end of April, Georgia Highlands College’s Cartersville campus will host the first Northwest Georgia Management Conference, titled “Learn and Lead — Managing People Through Change.” The event is targeted toward managers of local businesses as well as human resource professionals.

For example, Tina Brush, a contract trainer and consultant with GHC’s Continuing Education Program, will be representing the Allatoona Society for Human Resource Management at the conference.

“We’re bringing HR professionals and managers together — and HR supports management — and to bring those groups together to see how they can work together to deal with common issues and that is, ‘How do we ensure our organizations are ready to deal with the changes that come their way?’” Brush said.

According to a press release, the conference will feature “senior operating managers from HNI Corporation, Gerdau Steel, NorthSide Bank and Zep Inc. Other featured speakers include Stephanie Sloan (The Hay Group) who will look at the importance of [emotional quotient] in dealing with change. Attendees will also enjoy a networking workshop conducted by Parnick Jennings (Shaw Hankins) and Steve Tuck (Edward Jones, Woodstock and Founding Member of Business Network International).

“The afternoon provides an opportunity to attend two of three break-out sessions: Legal Challenges in Talent Acquisitions (C.R. Wright, Partner — Fisher & Phillips), Strategic Advantages in Managing People (Mike Murphy, Former Plant Manager, Anheuser Busch), and Georgia Department of Labor — Building Workforce Partnerships (DOL representatives).

Brush said having a large-scale conference in Cartersville that targets northwest Georgia businesses is not only an opportunity for local businesses to take part based on proximity, but could open the door for more northwest Georgia-based events in the future.

“I think what’s significant is this is the first time all of these organizations have banded together to offer a conference in this area,” Brush said. “... We’ve got facilities here now, not only at Georgia Highlands, but I anticipate in a very short time we’ll outgrow Georgia Highlands and will have to move it over to the convention center because we’re pretty much going to max out what we can accommodate.”

The press release further states, “This conference marks the first collaborative effort among Allatoona SHRM, Greater Rome SHRM, Georgia Highlands College — Continuing Education and the Employer Committees of Bartow, Cobb/Cherokee, and Floyd/Gordon Counties. Northwest Georgia has many economic opportunities in its future and this conference seeks to help prepare managers to capitalize on these opportunities and help move their organizations forward.”

The conference will be held Tuesday, April 30, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Student Center located at 5441 Highway 20, N.E., Cartersville.

The release states attendees will be able to take advantage of the following opportunities:

• Learn how to manage the natural emotional reactions to change

• Learn and practice proven networking skills

• Understand the legal land mines you must avoid when making staffing decisions

• Develop an appreciation of the strategic importance of your relationships with your workforce and how you can turn these relationships into a sustainable competitive advantage

• Find out how the Department of Labor can partner with your organization to meet your staffing and training needs

• Hear from senior level managers as they tell you what they need from you to ensure your organization is ready and able to meet the challenges presented by change.

• Ask questions and get the answers you need to contribute more effectively in your organizations.

Registration fees are $50 for members of sponsoring organizations; $75 for non-members; and $15 for students. Members of sponsoring organizations may register co-workers at the member rate. Lunch is included.
