Like last year, the Lady Canes defeated their first round opponent in the Class AAA state playoffs.
And like last year, they have made it to the second round where they will play either St. Pius or Banks County.
The question remains, though, can the Lady Canes make it past round two where their quest for a state title ended last season.
The answer would be yes judging by the way the girls handled Morgan County on Tuesday at Dellinger Park.
“I was very pleased by how we played today,” said Canes coach Melissa Moore following the Lady Canes’ 4-0 victory. “We were aggressive from start to finish.”
It took approximately one hour for Darian DeFrench and Maddi McGinnis to win their singles matches, and Annabeth and Charleston Fox and Ali Norwood and Sarah Vaughn to win their doubles matches.
French won, 6-1, 6-2; McGinnis, 6-3, 6-3; the Fox sisters, 6-1, 6-2; and Norwood and Vaughn, 6-2, 6-2.
“All our players were sharp with their angles and they hit the alleys with perfection,” Moore said.
Counting the regular season, the region tournament and the first round of the state playoffs, the Lady Canes head to the second round of the state playoffs sporting a perfect 21-0 record.
They were 17-0 during the regular season, a perfect 3-0 in the region championship and 1-0 thus far in the state playoffs.
“The girls’ play was fantastic today [against Morgan County],” Moore said. “I expect them to play at the same level against whomever we play next.”
If the opponent is indeed the Lady Golden Lions, then the Canes will be going up against the defending Class AAA state champions. St. Pius X also was the state champions in 2009.
Cartersville was the Class AAA girls’ state champion in 2005.
