Flashing lights and orange cones, deputies and a transport van. The scene at Waterside Drive near Red Top Mountain State Park was repeated across the county Friday night as authorities worked safety checkpoints.

Located in four areas — North Main Street in Acworth, Sandtown Road in Acworth, the Red Top setup and a last at State Route 20 Spur — the road checks focused on the typical safe driving habits — speeding, seat belts, driving under the influence and child safety seats.

Bartow County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Lee Fletcher said that through 11 p.m. nine arrests had been made for a variety charges, including DUI, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, underage consumption of alcohol and an outstanding warrant among others.

In addition to the BCSO, agents from the Bartow-Cartersville Drug Task Force, Georgia State Patrol troopers and officers from the Department of Natural Resources were involved in the operation.

During the checkpoints, suspects fled from officers at the Sandtown and Red Top locations. As of 11 p.m. the suspects had not been located.
