The National Weather Service updated the severe weather alert at 3:37 p.m. Thursday, covering 53 Georgia counties.
“A persistent upper level trough over the lower Mississippi Valley will continue to bring abundant moisture to north and central Georgia through Friday,” stated the NWS alert. “Additional rainfall of 1 to 2 inches appears likely through Friday with locally higher amounts possible. These amounts combined with the heavy rain that has already fallen will be sufficient to produce flooding and flash flooding in the watch area.”
