With manpower a nonissue, CPD now looks to bring in the most qualified officers for future positions.
CPD Capt. Mark Camp said the staffing situation is subject to change as it is for any law enforcement agency.
To help alleviate a delay in selecting a candidate in the future, the agency in August will hold a recruiting session.
“We are considering offering up to three testing sessions per year if we need to,” Camp said. “Since this our first time actually announcing a test session, we will base the need for future sessions on the response that we get from this first session.”
Scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 17, at 8:30 a.m., the first phase of the recruiting effort will be a combination written and video examination held at the Public Safety Headquarters, 195 Cassville Road in Cartersville. Testing, which will last three hours, will be limited to 25 candidates.
“Announcing a testing session in advance is simply a way for us to have ample time to select a qualified applicant should positions become open through attrition,” Camp said, adding that no additional officers will be hired.
“These positions are not new positions. We would hire for existing slots that come open in the future through attrition,” he added. “There are no new positions being added to the budget. I need to be very clear about that.”
To be able to test, all applicants must download and complete the application package, which can be found at www.cartersvillepolice.com under the Employment Opportunities section. Interested candidates may pick up a copy of the application package at the department, 195 Cassville Road in Cartersville.
Completed application packages must be turned in to the police department by Monday, Aug. 12. Applicants must have submitted a complete application package in order to test. A complete package consists of the application itself as well as all of the other requested documentation outlined in the package.
“All we are really doing by this process is changing from starting the recruiting process when a slot becomes open to developing a pool of qualified applicants so that when a slot is available we have already done some of the legwork and can start the remaining portion of the selection and hiring process and be ahead of the curve,” Camp said.
Applicants must meet the minimum requirements for the position, among them are:
• At least 21 years of age
• High school diploma or GED; college is preferred
• Has not applied with the department within the past year
• No felony arrests in lifetime
• No misdemeanor arrests in the past 10 years
• No recreational drug usage in past five years
• Must pass a polygraph test, a psychological evaluation, a drug screen, a physical agility test and a physical exam
• No driver’s license suspensions in past 10 years
• No citations or arrests for driving under the influence, fleeing and eluding, or reckless driving

Interested applicants must register for the exam no later than Monday, Aug. 12, by calling Camp at 770-607-6212. Those applicants registered for the test will be sent information about the testing procedures and what is covered in the test.
