The Cass softball team is expecting plenty of wins this season.

However, the team may have to wait until Thursday to get its first after the Lady Colonels took a loss Tuesday at home to Woodstock by a score of 6-0.

“They were pretty solid. They didn’t make any mistakes and we made two or three,” Cass coach Greg Hight said. “We just couldn’t piece together hitting with runners on.”

Cass’ offense was not absent as the team had six hits in the game.

“We were hitting the ball hard, but we just couldn’t find the holes with runners in scoring position,” he said of his team’s performance. “We had a couple of hard hit balls. They were just right at people.”

The loss does not have Hight worried.

“We have just got to swing the bats a little better,” he said. “We’ll be fine.”

Bre Mahrt had two of Cass’ six hits on the game.

The Lady Colonels will take the field again at 5 p.m. Thursday on the road against North Cobb.

Unlike Cass, Excel had no trouble scoring runs in its game Tuesday.

The Lady Eagles moved to 1-1 on the season when they were defeated by a score of 14-11 at home to Pepperell in what coach Chad Parker called a “barn burner.”

Pepperell continued to put up runs in the top of almost every inning, while Excel’s offense continued to respond in the bottom of the inning.

The offense allowed Excel to stay within reaching distance throughout the game and no more so than when freshman catcher Lindsey Mauldin hit a grand slam in the sixth to pull her team within one.

The young Excel team could not pull the game out in the end, but impressed Parker.

“The best thing about the game is that we never quit,” he said. “Every time they scored some runs we came right back in the bottom of the inning. It was a hard fought game and that’s great to see with a team full of freshmen.”

Mauldin finished the game 3-for-5 with 7 RBIs.

Excel will hit the road for a matchup against Coosa at 5:30 on Tuesday.
