A shorthanded Cass High volleyball team put up as valiant of a fight as possible before succumbing to Fannin County and Pickens, which hosted Thursday’s tri-match.

The Lady Colonels faltered with their serves against the home side, dropping a two-set match to the Lady Dragons, 13-25, 20-25.

“We missed all our serves,” said Cass coach Alicen Webster, “and we had two main players out with injuries.”

Against Fannin, Cass ran into an opponent that connected on many of its serves, with the Lady Rebels piling on the points in an 8-25, 4-25 victory over the Lady Colonels.

“They are a pretty good team,” Webster said of Fannin County. “We worked together as a team, but they had this one server that just ate us up.”

The Lady Colonels, who expect to be shorthanded for the foreseeable future, hope that one of the junior varsity players takes advantage of an opportunity to plug a couple of holes in the lineup.

“We play Saturday at the Rockmart tournament, and I hope to bring JV players up with me … [to] see if they can help us out,” Webster said.
