Bartow County continues to draw attention from manufacturers as Surya Carpets, an India-based company, has filed a developments of regional impact form with the Northwest Georgia Regional Commission.

The document, completed by Karl Lutjens of Southland Engineering in Cartersville, is required when a business is looking at property that requires rezoning. The plot of land — approximately 75 acres — is located at 1095 Cass White Road. According to the Bartow County Board of Assessors, the land is zoned for agricultural use.

The parcel is located to the west of the Highland 75 industrial park, with Great Valley Parkway running between the two sites. A house dating back to the early 20th century sits on the land near Cass White Road.

According to the DRI, the project is expected to unfold in two phases. The first phase will include a 574,00-square-foot facility, with 50,000 feet designated as office space for the company. The second phase, which is planned to occur within three years of completing the first phase, calls for an additional 711,000 square feet. In all, the facility could total approximately 1.285 million square feet. The DRI estimated the first phase would be done by the end of 2014.

Surya Carpets is a manufacturer of area rugs and home accessories, according to the company’s website. It was founded by Surya Tiwari in 1976 in the village of Ugapur in northeastern India. Surya began operating in the U.S. in 1986 and now produces more than 20,000 products, which include rugs, rug pads, pillows, poufs, throws and wall art. The company maintains an office in Calhoun.
