Richard T. Zerbe, 80, died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013, after a long illness. Born in Altoona, Penn., he was the son of the late Elwood Earl Zerbe and the late Mary Edna Johnston Zerbe. He also was proceeded in death by his beloved grandmother, Florence Edna Zerbe; father and mother-in-law, John and Sally Cason; sister, Mary Ann Zerbe O’Connell; brothers-in-law, Richard O’Connell and Eugene Lee; nephew, Richard O’Connell Jr.; and nieces, Leslie Lee Ahyat and Julia Lee Ryberg.

Dick graduated from North Fulton High School in Atlanta and attended the University of Georgia where he was a member of the football team. He loved the Dawgs. Dick served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. When he returned from service, he reentered UGA and was a student-coach for the freshman team. He was a Bulldog Club Member and had attended all home games from 1967 until he became ill.

For 25 years, he worked in the major appliance division of General Electric as a customer service specialist and manager. After retirement, he helped establish customer service departments for many companies.

He served as a volunteer with the Cartersville Medical Center Auxiliary in the outpatient department for 16 years. The hospital employees fondly called him “Mister Dick.”

He has been a member of the Episcopal Church of Ascension in Cartersville since 1995. He served on the Vestry, the building and grounds committee and was director of the ushers.

In 2008, the Zerbe family was named by the Cartersville Woman’s Club the Georgia Federation of Womens’ Club Seventh District and the Georgia Federation of Women’s Club Family of the Year.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Cason Zerbe; his precious dog, Cason Love; sister-in-law, Sallylove Cason-Lee; nieces, Jeanne Lee (Frank Yee) and Susan O’Connell; nephews-in-law, Greg Ahyat and Chris Ryberg; great-nieces/nephews, Tali Bouskila, Anna Wilson (Heath), Aaron Bouskila (Nicole) and Christopher Yee; great-great-niece, Della Marie Wilson; special friends, Carl and Brenda Worley, Taylor Williams, Michael Suits and Steve King.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, at the Episcopal Church of Ascension, Cartersville. A reception will follow. There will be an honor guard from the Cartersville Medical Center Auxiliary.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Episcopal Church of Ascension, Parish Hall Building Fund, 205 West Cherokee Ave., Cartersville, GA 30120.

Arrangements are being handled by Georgia Cremation Centers and the Episcopal Church of Ascension.
