For Pastor W.J.E. Coombs, music is a powerful instrument to share the Lord’s message with people across the globe.

“I really think that music has [had] an incredible impact [in my ministry] in that it has helped me reach even some young people, because young people love music so much,” said Coombs, who has been pastoring Greater New Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church in Cartersville since 1999. “To be honest with you, when I first came to Cartersville ... I shied away from singing because there were preachers in town that ... said I was entertaining people and not teaching and preaching. So I shied away from singing and really focused [more on] preaching and teaching, I guess, to kind of prove to them that I was a preacher first.

“My pastor had a talk with me. He said, ‘Listen, God has gifted you — you use every gift.’ And when he said that to me, I realized that I was allowing them to have an opinion that thwarted me from using every gift God has given me for the body of Christ. So since then, I’ve done everything I could as far as preaching and teaching, but then not overlooking the singing because I think it’s helped draw so many people to Christ because [some people] will listen to a song, then come to church and hear the word. So it has made a great impact on [the] growth and development of our ministry.”

Singing since he was in elementary school, Coombs recorded his first album in 1986. Along with performing the national anthem for the Evander Holyfield vs. Bert Cooper heavyweight championship fight in 1991, some of his most notable appearances have included “Bobby Jones Gospel Explosion VII” in 1993 and opening for artists, such as the Rev. Al Green and Shirley Caesar.

Coombs’ latest vocal offering is the single “Speak.” The song was released Dec. 3 by God Never Fails Records, which is owned and operated by Greater New Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church.

With people across the world obtaining copies, one listener described “Speak” as a “silky, smooth, R&B, gospel song.” Written by Byron Douglas, “Speak” features Coombs at lead vocals; background vocalists — Joy Hill Watson, Ellisa Lowe Douglas and Byron Douglas; and musicians — Byron Douglas and Jonathan “J-Rod” Sullivan on drums.

“It is, I believe, a powerful praise and worship song,” Coombs said. “It came out of a desire to help those who are trying to hear from God. There are moments in our lives when we just need to hear which direction to go because we are trying so hard to do things the right way. It just seems like it’s difficult to hear from God as to what I need to do, where I need to go. So this song kind of conveys that message as to, ‘Lord, I need you to really speak and let me know which direction to take because it’s a trying time for me and I want to hold on, so show me the way to go.’

“I’m praying that this song will encourage. ... [This time of year is] supposed to be one of the most joyous and blessed time of the year, but sometimes people stress themselves so much [about] what they lack and what they can’t buy and what they can’t do. So we’re hoping that this song ... will minister to let people know to just take time, take a break, relax, talk to the Lord and pray and let him speak to you so that you don’t stress yourself out. I’m hoping that it really impacts the world to the point that they will want to recognize that there’s a Lord who’s still alive and well and he’s there for us if we just talk with him.”

“Speak” currently can be purchased on iTunes, Amazon, Rhapsody and Spotify. At www.gnfrecords.bigcartel.com, “Speak” — containing radio edit, extended and instrumental versions — is available for $5.
