With the region and state basketball tournament schedules in limbo for most of the week, finally there is some clarity as to when and where Bartow’s basketball teams will begin playoff action.
The GHSA has extended the deadline for each region to finish its tournament through Wednesday.
As a result, Adairsville and Cartersville will begin their quest for region championships this weekend. The boys and girls tournament will begin today. Adairsville’s boys and girls teams have a bye in the first round and will play Saturday. The Cartersville boys and girls teams have two byes and will open in the semifinals on Monday. The championship of the region tournaments will be on Tuesday.
In Region 7-AAAA, Cass High will host the boys and girls region tournaments. The Cass girls are scheduled to play Saturday at 1 p.m. against Ridgeland. The boys will play immediately after at 2:30 p.m. against Southeast Whitfield.
The second round of the tournament will be Monday, the semifinals Tuesday, and the championship round is scheduled for Wednesday.
In Region 6-A, the Excel boys team plays Whitefield at 7 p.m. today at Trion High in the first round. The Lady Eagles play today at 8:30 p.m. against St. Francis in Darlington’s gym.
The second round of the tournament is Saturday and the championship round is Monday.
As for Woodland in Region 5-AAAAA, the girls open up on Monday and will play the winner of the East Paulding-South Paulding game Saturday.
The boys will play Saturday at home at 6 p.m. against Lithia Springs. If the Wildcats win, they will move on to the second round to play South Paulding on the road Monday.
Also, it is not yet official, but it appears the GHSA state basketball playoffs will be condensed due to the postponement of region tournament dates and will begin Friday, Feb. 21, for the girls, and Saturday, Feb. 22, for the boys. Round two will begin Monday, Feb. 24, and Tuesday, Feb. 25. Round three will take place Wednesday, Feb. 26, and Thursday, Feb. 27. The semifinals will remain as originally scheduled for Friday, Feb. 28, for the girls, and Saturday, March 1, for the boys.
