The Cass girls soccer team split a pair of games last week, falling to Sprayberry by a score of 2-1 Wednesday, but bouncing back to defeat LaFayette 2-0 for the squad’s first victory of the season.

Sprayberry jumped out to a lead with its first goal coming in the 30th minute of the first half. Sprayberry scored again in the 57th minute on a corner kick to take a two-goal advantage.

The Lady Colonels got on the board in the 63rd minute when Madison Scoggins assisted Jana Morning for the score.

However, Cass would fall short in the end and was unable to find the goal to even the match.

“We had several opportunities after we scored to tie the game, but just couldn't put the ball in the net,” Cass head coach Phil Phillips said of the game.

Cass earned a better result on Friday in its shutout victory over LaFayette.

Brieanna Heaton scored in the 30th minute off of a pass from Hope Elrod. The goal gave Cass a 1-0 lead entering halftime.

Scoggins then scored her second goal from 22 yards out in the 73rd minute, giving the Lady Colonels some breathing room. The assist was credited to Isela Moraga.

The defense held on from that point as Cass was able to pick up the victory.

“It felt good to secure the first win of the season after a tough loss on Wednesday,” Phillips said.

The Lady Colonels will return to action today at 5:30 p.m. in a home game against Cherokee.
