For example, changes for review include now providing one unit credit to middle school students who complete Coordinate Algebra calculating class rankings at Cartersville High School based on the application of a 4.0 scale with additional quality points added for the passing of Advanced Placement, honors/accelerated and dual/joint enrollment courses.
If approved, the new changes will be available for review for a period of 30 days at the central office, 15 Nelson St., Cartersville.
In other Cartersville schools news, Superintendent Howard Hinesley during the regular Thursday work session addressed the potential of an approximate $949,000 purchase of a new electrical grid for Cartersville Primary School, which will be discussed to be funded through the next Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax cycle.
“That school was built in the ’70s and, in my opinion, [the school board] is doing a great job of keeping it up, and generally, you get 50-plus years out of a building, so as you put a million [dollars] here and a million there ... You start looking at how many million you’re going to put in before you build a new school,” Hinesley said. “In my opinion, you can get 14 to 16 more years out of [CPS], but you at least need to have a discussion as you start looking these kinds of things because you’re looking ... at that whole facility.”
Hinesley also provided numbers for this week’s absences due to a recent stomach flu making its rounds in Cartersville schools. By Wednesday, CPS saw an average of about 4.2 percent of students absent due by the flu; Cartersville Elementary School saw an average of about 3.3 percent of students absent due to the flu; Cartersville Middle School saw an average of about 2.5 percent students absent due to the flu; and Cartersville High School saw “nothing unusual,” but 10 students were sent home in a 1 1/2-hour timeframe Wednesday.
Hinesley said the numbers do not reflect checkouts after 11:30 a.m.
The board will hold its regular business session Monday at 6 p.m. in the central office boardroom.
