“Our band director is the program director at Pepperell High School [in Lindale]. He has won numerous awards up there and [the band has played] across the country,” Superintendent Howard Hinesley said during the board’s regular business session. “... We’re very impressed with the support that the school system gives the band ... and we’re really excited about him.”
Band director David Snipes previously this year presented his resignation to the school board.
In other personnel board news, the board accepted the resignation of Cartersville High School football coach and teacher Frank Barden. Board member Floyd Braid asked Hinesley to explain the hiring process for Barden’s replacement. He said one of the non-negotiable aspects of the position is the requirement to teach.
“The position has been advertised and in the advertisement it calls for the certification to be physical education or any other position that we might have available. It calls for head coaching experience or has been an offensive coordinator or defensive coordinator as part of the criteria,” Hinesley said, adding the job calls for the applicant to have been a head coach or coordinator within the last five years. “If people apply who do not meet that second criteria, more than likely they will be eliminated from the interview process.”
He said a selection committee, which includes community members, includes former and current booster club members and governance committee representation as well as female and minority representation. The committee’s selection will then be presented to the board, as the board has to vote to hire certified employees.
Butler said he hopes interviews to begin by Friday, March 21.
The board approved its consent agenda for the evening, which included the following:
• Troxell Communication, Inc, of Atlanta, as the low bid for Elmo Document Cameras in the amount of $16,082, to be paid from Striving Readers Literacy Grant funds.
• Womack, Smith & Lewis, of Cartersville, as the low bid for Cartersville Primary School and Cartersville Middle School HVAC replacement projects in the amount of $1.4 million.
• The revised System Strategic Plan.
• Curriculum changes to be placed on the table for public review and comment for the next 30 days.
• Clarification changes in employee policies regarding overtime pay, compensation of classified personnel, leave for certified personnel, food service management and leave for classified personnel.
