On Tuesday, April 15, about 8:23 p.m., a Cartersville Police Department officer was dispatched to Parkway North in Cartersville in reference to a missing person, according to an incident report. The report states the officer met with the complainant who stated his sister, Shannon Nicole Merrit, 24, of Cartersville, had gone missing.

The complainant stated that a week ago, April 8, about 11 p.m., Merrit left from the room at Parkway North upset and no one in the family had talked with her for the past week.

The complainant stated when he calls her phone it goes straight to voicemail or just rings. He said that earlier in the day on April 15 he called her phone and a man answered and said he dropped Merrit off at her mom’s house.

The complainant stated he called Merrit’s mother’s house and she stated she has not had any contact with Merrit in more than a week.

The complainant stated he believes Merrit went with some of her friends to go on a “drug bender” and that he doesn’t know any of her friends, where they live, their phone numbers or what they drive, but he believes she is somewhere in the area of the RaceTrac.

The missing person was entered into the Georgia Crime Information Center and the complainant was advised to contact CPD if he has any additional information regarding the case.

Meth found at gas station

On Tuesday, April 15, about 9:04 a.m., a CPD officer was conducting a foot patrol of 1139 N. Tennessee St., Mack’s Marathon, which resulted in the arrest of an individual for possession of methamphetamine, according to an incident report.

Upon making contact with a few people playing slot machines inside the gas station, the deputy spoke with Michael Roland, later arrested, who appeared extremely nervous. Roland stated he was on active probation and he appeared to be on a stimulant drug. After consenting to a physical search, Roland failed to obey instructions and appeared to be looking for an avenue of escape.

Upon searching Roland, the deputy found a small plastic bag containing suspected meth. Roland was placed under arrest for possession of meth.

Roland was transported to the jail for booking and processing.

Porch swing stolen

On Tuesday, April 15, about 8:29 p.m., a Bartow County Sheriff’s Office deputy was dispatched to a Cartersville residence in reference to criminal trespass and theft by taking, according to an incident report. Upon arrival, the deputy met with the complainant, who stated her front porch swing was stolen.

The complainant stated she received a text message earlier that day from her nephew/suspect, who said he was at her residence and had fixed her lawn mower tire. He also asked for a ride back to Kingston.

A few minutes later, the complainant arrived at her house to pick up her dog and noticed her porch swing was missing. She stated the swing was not hung yet but was sitting on the porch out of view from the street.

She said she spoke by phone with the suspect and he promised he didn’t take the swing. Due to the suspect’s criminal history, the complainant stated he is not supposed to be at her residence unless she is there. She also stated a witness noticed a green van in front of her residence earlier that day as he drove by.

She said it seemed weird the suspect would take the porch swing, which couldn’t have been seen from the roadway, and that items like her lawn mower, wheelbarrow and post hole digger that could be seen from the road were left behind.

Per the complainant’s request, the deputy placed an extra patrol for day hours during the next two weeks.
