“I just thought it would be a great idea to get people to downtown Cartersville,” said Catherine Woods, special events coordinator for the Cartersville DDA. “The main purpose is to get people into the doors of places that they haven’t been before, maybe a place they didn’t know much about, because a lot of the challenges are going to be inside actual stores or restaurants.
“So this may be that person’s first time walking into that particular merchant. And also with the weather getting better, I thought it would be a great excuse just to bring families and friends downtown and everybody just be out and about at all of the different locations.”
With the contest’s prize of a $100 Visa gift card up for grabs, participants will be able to obtain a list of challenges starting April 25 online at www.downtowncartersville.org or www.facebook.com/cartersvilledowntown or at the Cartersville Welcome Center, 1 Friendship Plaza. With about 50 locations selected, challenges will feature a wide cross section of downtown Cartersville, such as museums, boutiques and restaurants.
“There will be different point values [based on difficulty] that will range from one to five,” Woods said. “[During the scavenger hunt], you go with your camera or your camera phone ... and take a selfie of the photo [description].
“For instance in the press release, I have [the example where you] take a selfie sitting on the stage at Friendship Plaza. So you would just simply take a photo of yourself sitting there. Then you would keep all of them on your phone and either email them to us [email@example.com] or come by and show them to us to let us score you ... anytime between April 25 and May 2 [at 5 p.m.]”
Along with the contest appealing to a wide audience, Cartersville DDA Manager Tara Currier believes this offering will be a new, fun way to celebrate downtown Cartersville with National Historic Preservation Month around the corner.
“We feel it will be an event that is going to attract hopefully a broad range of demographics,” Currier said. “Certainly younger people are all about taking the selfies and going around town and even older generations like getting out and exploring their area and a fun scavenger hunt is a great way to do that.
“With May being National Historic Preservation Month, we felt that this was a great tie-in to not only just get people out for a fun activity to explore downtown and hopefully do some shopping and dining, but it will be a great opportunity to learn some of those little nugget facts throughout the downtown area that we have. Friendship Plaza is filled with all kinds of historic charm and [Young Brothers Pharmacy has] the world’s first outdoor Coca-Cola sign, so there’s just so many things that are historic to our area. Hopefully this will be a fun way for people to learn a little bit more about their community while also having fun in a very new age scavenger hunt.”
