Aimed at empowering young women ages 10 to 19, the Girls Run the World Empowerment Seminar this weekend will reach out to local youths, offering education, resources and encouragement.

“Our overall goal is to let these young ladies know that we care — they have women that they can look up to and that have their back,” said Soul Sistas Run Inc. President Pamela Whitfield. “We will support them, mentor them, love them, accept them, direct them, empower them, reach them and teach them, and help them grow.”

Presented by Soul Sistas Run on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Matthew Hill Center, 129 1/2 Aubrey St., Cartersville, the seminar is free and open to girls ages 10 to 19.

“... We will offer different classes for age groups 10 to 13 and 14 to 19,” Whitfield said. “We have a speaker from the Bartow County Heath Department that will be presenting a class on teen pregnancy, abstaining, STD(s) for the older ladies. The younger ladies will be in a class of self-esteem.

“We have a host of panelists — local ladies, i.e. teachers, business women, students, professionals — that will be [speaking] on the obstacles that they faced while being a teenager and how they overcame those obstacles and now why [they] are a girl that runs the world.”

The schedule offers an opportunity for mothers to take part, with two sessions on parenting. Whitfield said volunteers also are welcome.

“Women are the most vital part of this world,” she said. “... We have to start these girls at a young age to know their worth and that’s it OK to expect better things, to want better things and how to achieve them by having the education and someone in your corner to push them, to encourage them, to provide the necessary resources.”

Currently mentoring in local city schools, Whitfield said the organization aims to reach each young woman and grow the program.

“SSR sees no color. We are about healing the soul of women, empowering, loving, caring and sharing, bridging the gap between our races while providing the necessary resources and help whenever, wherever,” she said. “We are all in this together, no woman left behind.”
