A bus filled with 35 passengers — 32 Boy Scouts and three adults — caught fire on I-75 south at mile marker 291 after mechanical problems in the engine compartment. Two passengers suffered smoke inhalation and were treated on the scene. The Boy Scouts were returning to Canton from a camp in Tennessee.

Bartow County Station 1 and Battalion 1 and Cartersville engine 2 extinguished the fire that held traffic for an hour.

A church bus passing by the scene offered to take some of the children to the McDonald’s on Highway 20. The remainder of the passengers were transported by the Bartow County Fire Department.
