City Manager Pam Madison confirmed Jones’ resignation Wednesday evening.
“He came in this morning and submitted his resignation, citing medical reasons,” she said.
When asked if Jones’ departure was expected, Madison said, “No, I was not expecting it.”
Jones was named chief in September 2011 following the retirement of former Chief Charles Stafford in June of that year. After leaving the U.S. Marine Corps, Jones went to work in law enforcement, serving with the Bartow County Sheriff’s Office and spending three years with the Drug Enforcement Administration. He joined Adairsville Police Department in 2010 as a lieutenant.
Madison said the city council will meet in executive session following tonight’s council meeting to discuss the process of appointing an interim police chief and the options regarding selecting a new chief of police.
The Daily Tribune News on Tuesday afternoon filed two Open Records Act requests concerning personnel matters with APD. Madison confirmed receipt of those requests, but said one will be affected by pending litigation.
