A jury Thursday returned guilty verdicts for a brother and sister charged in the shooting death of their roommate in March 2013.

Steven Eller and Tammy Murphy lived with Danny Lamar Gravley at 13 Dogwood Place. Gravley was found March 17, 2013, in his truck on Red Top Mountain Road, dead from a gunshot wound to the head.

Eller and Murphy were charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, concealing the death of another and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime in connection with his death. Eller was found guilty on all counts, and Murphy was found guilty of felony murder, aggravated assault and concealing the death of another. The jury returned not guilty verdicts for Murphy on the remaining two charges.

The defense maintained in opening statements Monday that Gravley became violent with Murphy, pointing a gun at the woman. Eller stepped in and the three struggled. During the altercation, Eller’s attorney Lora Alsher said, the gun fired, killing Gravley.

Investigators said during testimony that Eller admitted to shooting Gravley during a struggle before he and Murphy loaded the body into the truck and drove it to the Emerson location.

Judge Suzanne H. Smith ordered a pre-sentence investigation on both defendants before the sentencing hearing on Sept. 30 at 9 a.m.
