Authorities say stalled traffic Friday on Interstate 75 northbound in Acworth was the result of a woman jumping from an overpass.

According to the Bartow County Sheriff's Office incident report, emergency response crews were dispatched shortly before 4 p.m. to mile marker 279 at the Groovers Landing Road overpass.

Witnesses said they saw the 32-year-old Dallas woman, whose name has not been released, "quickly exit her vehicle and run toward the guard rail and jump off the bridge without any hesitation." The woman, who was air lifted to Grady Memorial Hospital, landed on her buttocks and fell backward onto the interstate.

She was lying in the middle of the highway when deputies arrived, was extremely disoriented and unable to provide any information except her first name, the report said.

All northbound lanes on Interstate 75 were blocked about a mile north of Glade Road and were reopened around 5:15 p.m.

Man allegedly punches deputy during traffic stop

A man who was suspected of driving with a suspended license is accused of punching a BCSO deputy and attempting to flee on foot to avoid arrest.

According to the incident report, the deputy was assisting an Adairsville police officer who had pulled over Deangelo Dee Buckner, 30, 121 Ripley Ave., Adairsville, around 8:30 p.m. Friday on U.S. Highway 41 at Cherry Street.

After the Adairsville officer checked Buckner's driver's license and as he walked toward Buckner and the deputy, the officer told Buckner he was under arrest.

Authorities say that is when Buckner attempted to flee on foot. The deputy grabbed his waist, and Buckner allegedly struck the deputy in the eye.

After a struggle on the ground, Buckner was placed in the officer's patrol car and jailed. He was arrested by Adairsville police and charged with obstruction of an officer, driving while license withdrawn and loud radio.

No fires

Cartersville and Bartow County fire departments reported no fires in the 48 hours preceding 5 p.m. Saturday.
