The Georgia Press Association presented its 2010 Better Newspaper Contest awards Friday night at the annual GPA convention held on Jekyll Island, and The Daily Tribune News and its news staff won seven awards.

The Daily Tribune News competes in Division F among Georgia daily newspapers.

The 2009 Progress section called "A Closer Look" received the first-place award for Special Issues.

"This annual special edition was a true team effort," said Publisher Johnette Dawson. "The news staff worked extremely well together to produce readable, educational stories and photographs. The advertising department sold more advertising than in 2008, in a 'down' economy. The graphics department produced beautiful ads and Sue Clement designed the front pages of each section. Our production crew made sure the color was first class. Our accounting and circulation staff also contributed to this award-winning effort."

The lifestyles section of The Daily Tribune News won second place in lifestyle coverage. The paper also won a third-place award for its headline writing.

Education reporter Jon Gargis won two GPA awards this year, second place for serious columns and third place for education coverage.

Features editor Marie Nesmith received a second-place award for religion coverage.

Crime and courts reporter Brande Poulnot won a second-place award for investigative reporting.
