Various city and county baseball teams begin play today in their respective Georgia Recreation and Parks Association District 5 tournaments.

The Bartow County Parks and Recreation Department, a GRPA member, hosts the District 5 Mite Boys Baseball Championship, which features two teams from Bartow County and three teams from Cartersville.

The 9- to 10-year-old baseball championship will be held at Hamilton Crossing, with Rome-Floyd County playing Bartow on Field 4 at 6 p.m. today. Cartersville awaits the winner for an 8 p.m. game on the same field. The loser of the Bartow-Rome game would play at 8 p.m. Tuesday on Field 7.

Cartersville's other two teams play today on Field 7, facing off against Cherokee County and Bartow at 6 and 8 p.m., respectively. If both city teams win, they would play each other at 6 p.m. Tuesday on Field 4. They could, however, play at 6 p.m. Tuesday on Field 7 should both teams lose their opening games.

The GRPA 12-and-under Midget Baseball District 5 Championship will be held at Al Rollins Park, which is located at 521 Threadmill Road in Dalton.

Cartersville has three teams in the championship while Bartow has one.

Cartersville 1 awaits the winner of the Cartersville 3-Bartow game, which is today at 6 p.m. Cartersville 1 would play the winner at 8 p.m.

Cartersville 2 would play the winner of the Dalton-Rome/Floyd game, which is at 6 p.m., in an 8 p.m. game today.

The loser of the Cartersville 3-Bartow game would play the loser of the Cartersville 2 bracket game at 8 p.m. Tuesday, while the loser of the Dalton-Rome/Floyd game plays the loser of the Cartersville 1 bracket game at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Al Rollins Park also will serve as the site for the GRPA 14-U Junior Baseball District 5 Championship, where Cartersville plays Rome at 6 p.m. today and Bartow plays Cobb County at 8 p.m.

Cartersville would face Dalton at 8 p.m. Tuesday should it win, and Bartow would await that game's winner at 8 p.m. Wednesday should it win.

If both Cartersville and Bartow lose their opening games, the two teams would play at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

In addition to the aforementioned GRPA baseball games, the 2010 District 5 Mite Girls Fastpitch Softball Championship gets under way soon, with the BCPRD hosting that championship as well.

Bartow has two teams in the 9- to 10-year-old championship, as one team plays Bremen at 6 p.m. Thursday on Field 10 with the second county team playing Rome-Floyd County on the same field a couple of hours later.
