Cartersville police arrested two men just before 8 p.m. Saturday after an officer spotted one man using a screwdriver and hammer to punch the ignition of a Chevrolet 1500 pickup.

According to the report, Rodney Foster, 40, of 1193 Upper Salem Church Road, Jasper, told the officer his friend Clifford Ellis Jr., 52, of 77 Ellis Road, Cartersville, had lost the keys to the truck and asked him to bust the lock. Foster said Ellis had driven the pair to the location in a white Jeep Comanche.

When Ellis arrived, he told the officer both vehicles belonged to him and that he was aware Foster was breaking the ignition switch out. Because a check of the VIN numbers returned nothing and there were no tags, the officer requested proof of ownership. At that time Ellis allegedly admitted that the vehicles belonged to his boss who was not aware Ellis had them.

A call to Gilley's Auto Sales verified Ellis' statement.

Foster and Ellis were each arrested and charged with two counts of motor vehicle theft.

Walmart employee reports man opens orange juice to go with his vodka

Bartow County Sheriff's deputies were called to Walmart, 101 Market Place Blvd., early Sunday after a man reportedly drank orange juice and fled from employees.

According to the report, just before 12:30 a.m. a man entered the retailer with a bottle of vodka, which he was drinking, and began opening orange juice cartons to "chase" the alcohol.

When an employee told him he must pay for the juice, he obliged but ran to the back of the store and hid when asked to leave. He left when the employee said she was going to call police.

Accidents and fires

Cartersville police arrested a man Friday night after he allegedly struck a vehicle while turning onto Brookwood Drive from Jones Mill Road just after 11 p.m.

Witnesses followed Jeffrey Donald Wilson, 50, of 15 Mill Creek Drive, Cartersville, and obtained a license plate number for Wilson's Honda Accord.

When officers arrived, they reported Wilson was unstable and smelled of alcohol. He was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident.

Cartersville police worked one other accident. About 11:30 p.m. Saturday, a 1995 Chevy 1500 struck a 1989 Chevy S10 at Pine Grove Road and Etowah Drive. When police located the Chevy 1500, the driver said he was not aware he had struck the S10 and there was no damage consistent with the marks on the S10. No one was cited or injured.

The Georgia State Patrol reported working one accident with no injuries in the 24 hours through 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

Bartow County and Cartersville firefighters reported working no fires in the same time period.
