Bartow County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Sgt. Jonathan Rogers said parts are often sold for scrap metal, making "quick and easy money" for the suspects.
Tuesday representatives of a local medical transport business reported to Cartersville police the rear axle, radiator, battery, rear tires, catalytic converter and air conditioning unit stolen from a 1998 Dodge 3500.
The fleet vehicle had been parked in a vacant lot at 915 N. Tennessee St. and the thefts occurred between June 30 around 3 p.m. and 9 a.m. Tuesday.
BCSO deputies took a report Tuesday from Georgia Department of Transportation representatives, who said a battery was taken from one of the agency's tractors. It had been left on the side of the road, off U.S. Highway 411 at mile marker 23, from July 1 to Tuesday around 9 a.m.
Workers said it appeared the suspects tampered with the battery from a second tractor, but the part was guarded with a metal bar.
Man arrested for pedestrian under the influence, again
A request for a welfare check on a man lying on the side of Interstate 75 led Bartow County Sheriff's Office deputies to arrest the man, who said he had been released from jail a day prior on the same charge.
According to the incident report, officers were called to mile marker 305 around 10:40 a.m. Tuesday, and located Daniel Lynn Barnes, 42, formerly of Seattle, Wash. But Barnes did not respond when a deputy hit his siren while driving behind Barnes, who was walking with a large, hiking pack.
After the deputy got out of his patrol car and "ran him down," Barnes apologized and said he was "jamming out" with headphones. Deputies reported Barnes, who said he is now homeless, smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech and was off balance.
A portable test for the presence of alcohol registered Barnes' blood alcohol level at .203. He was arrested and charged with pedestrian under the influence.
