According to the incident report, Bartow County Sheriff's Office authorities responded to the 17 Running Deer Trail, Cartersville, home about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Witnesses reported that Stephen Michael Kutas, 45, told his relatives and family friends to go inside the house.
A 43-year-old man of that address was finishing a cigarette on the front porch and opened the door to see Kutas allegedly pointing a gun at an elderly couple, relatives and family friends. The alleged victim said Kutas pointed the gun at him, but he was able to slam the door and run to a neighbor's house to call 911.
One of the family friends also was able to escape, saying he ran out of the house when Kutas was not paying attention, and reported Kutas threatened to kill everyone in the home if they tried to run. Kutas also allegedly said if police came inside, he would kill everyone, then himself.
A Special Weapons and Tactical team crisis negotiator talked with Kutas, who eventually surrendered to authorities. He was taken to Cartersville Medical Center for a mental evaluation and cleared.
Kutas, of 302 Princeton Walk, Adairsville, was arrested and charged with false imprisonment, two counts of false imprisonment under the Family Violence Act, aggravated assault (FVA), terroristic threats and acts and five counts of terroristic threats and acts (FVA). He was boarded at the jail.
