Bartow County Sheriff's Office investigators Monday arrested an Acworth man on a felony dog fighting and misdemeanor animal cruelty charges, an agency news release said. Officials say the 12 Pit Bulls rescued are in fair condition, and 10 will likely be up for adoption.

Aug. 2, investigators served a search warrant at 4193 Creek Trail in Acworth, and say they found evidence of a dog fighting operation, such as steroids, other medications and photographs of injured canines.

Ricky Lee Hurley, 47, of that address was arrested after reporting to the sheriff's office to meet with investigators. He is charged with dog fighting and 12 counts of cruelty to animals.

The investigation resulted from an alleged Polk County dog fighting operation dismantled in June. An animal rights group and private investigative firm became involved and notified BCSO investigators of an alleged breeding and training operation ongoing at Hurley's home.

After his arrest, Hurley developed chest pains and was admitted to a Rome hospital.

Investigators say the case is ongoing and more arrests and charges are possible.
