Samaria Curtis went three-of-four from behind the plate, including a home run shot, and the Cass Lady Colonels opened their season with a 7-6 road win over South Cobb.

Curtis, a senior, scored two of the Lady Colonels' runs and stole a base in the Wednesday night game.

"It's always good to start off the season with a win," head coach Chris Allen said. "We've been practicing all summer long and it's nice to see how you stack up against a real opponent."

Cass had an easy time of things early, as the Lady Colonels held a 5-0 lead after the top of the third.

That ended in the bottom of the frame, however, as South Cobb nicked the Lady Colonels for two runs, to close to 5-2 after three innings had been played.

Cass came back the next inning, however, to answer the deuce and claim a 7-2 lead in the fourth.

That lead held until the sixth, when South Cobb sent two runners home, closing the score to 7-4. The home team then added two more runs in the seventh, for the final 7-6 tally.

Allen said he was proud of the Lady Colonels for taking South Cobb's best shot on the road and still finding a way to win.

"This is a learning experience and we have to learn how to take a lead and how to win, all those things," Allen said. "The girls hit the ball real well and they hung in and didn't get down when South Cobb was coming back on us."

Other Cass hitters contributing to the cause were Allison Abernathy, a junior, who got two hits, scored a run and stole a base; and Allison Story, a sophomore who got on base three times, scored two runs and stole two bases.

"We also had several sacrifices and our defense played fairly well," Allen said. "We made one error, which is always nice to do at the beginning of the season when you have the early jitters.

"We also didn't strike out much. When our hitters got down in the count, they remained patient and put the ball in play."

Jessica Fetzer, a senior, combined with Courtney Bailey, a freshman, for the Cass pitching duties.

Fetzer pitched three innings and allowed one earned run while Bailey worked four innings and gave up four earned runs.

Both pitchers recorded two strikeouts for their evening's work.

Cass returns to the diamond today, when it hosts Gordon Central.
